2017 Report and Winners List

Kitchener/Waterloo Ontario

The weekend of March 17, 18 & 19th saw a touch of spring in the air….and with that refreshing bit of air….we, The Owl’s Nest Carving Club were very pleased to present yet another successful “Wood Art in the Cities” carving competition….our 5th annual to date, held at RIM Park in Waterloo. This annual event is cohosted by our club and The Grand Valley Woodcarvers. Our portion of the competition, as always, was a general competition of various carving categories and skill levels with the exception of bird carving. Bird carving continues to be a part of the Grand Valley Woodcarvers annual Canadian National Wildfowl Carving competition. To which, incidentally, I can attest to having been incredible…as always. Kudos to their club and all its members for such a great show!  It’s a pleasure to work in tandem with such a professional and dedicated club.
With respect to our part of the competition this year, we received a total of 129 entries from 74 carvers. Some great works from new folks….always a pleasure to see…as well as many incredible new works from carvers who have patronized our competition throughout the years. Our thanks to all carvers for your continued interest and support in our competition. You continue to keep the show alive and well each and every year.
In addition, you also continue to challenge our esteemed judges, Mary-Ann Jack-Bleach and Frank Foster, both of whom deserve a big shout out for the support and expertise they continue to lend to our show.
Additional thanks to Lee Valley for their gift certificate donations for our Best of Level winners; to Chipping Away for their gift certificates for our Second Best of Level winners and to Steve Germann of Ranger Services for his generous donation to fund our winners’ ribbons.
So once again, thank you to all involved….those mentioned specifically here….and those who work behind the scenes to make this all come together. We hope to continue the event in the upcoming years as your dedication and interest warrants. For those who didn’t make it out this year….we hope to see you next year.
For those who were here….we look forward to seeing you… and your terrific works of art again, next year.

Alright….all that said….let’s get into a bit more specifics on what we all want to see….the show winners. Drum roll, please…..
